Japanese Temari Association
Certification Classes Requirements
Temari made for the first two levels do not have to be your own designs. You may submit ones that you make a from book or class instructions or anywhere. You don't send the actual temari to Japan.
For Level 1, you send only photographs. For Level 2, you send a photograph and the pattern for each temari (text and a diagram). Good execution of stitching is the important thing about Level 1. For Level 2, stitching is important as well as being able to communicate to someone else how you stitched the temari in your pattern. Using current JTA vocabulary is very important not only for the judges but for our translator. Because these are not your original work (requirements for Levels 3 and 4), design and color choices are not judged, only technical proficiency.
Level 1 – Submit one photo of superior
quality for each
1. Simple 4 division temari, stitched in masu kagari (squares)
2. Simple 6 division temari, stitched in mitsubane-kikkou kagari (tri-wing
or trefoil)
3. Simple 8 division temari, stitched in jyouge douji kagari (merry-go-round)
4. Simple 12 division temari stitched in uwagake chidori kagari (kiku herringbone).
Level 2 – Submit photos of superior quality
and directions
1. Three Combination 8 temari
2. Three Combination 10 temari
Preparing your submission is a wonderful opportunity for learning to improve your temari skills and make them the best that they can be. It helps promote the craft by supporting the JTA through the dues and fees you pay. And it helps to preserve the craft by the acknowledgement of good temari techniques practiced by the applicants.
