Temari Needles

Temari Needles

FIVE Extra Long Darners #3 (2 3/4 inches long)
FIVE Extra Long Darners #1 (3 1/2 inches long)

The Edmar company has these needles made for them in Japan. They use them for bouillon knots in Brazilian embroidery. I have found them to be absolutely the best needles for Japanese embroidery.

The gold eye makes it easy to thread. The point is extremely sharp so it easily pierces the temari ball. The shaft is long and straight so it slides through the ball like a dream. I use the #3 needle for stitching temari balls 3 inches and under in diameter. For larger balls, I use the longer #1 size.

V-Rulers from Tokyo

The V-ruler is such a handy gadget to have among your temari supplies. It allows you to quickly and accurately measure pin placement for guidelines and design threads.   These rulers are from the Japan Temari Association. I can send you them at cost.

The V-ruler is marked in the metric system. The smallest marks are millimeters and the largest are centimeters. Note the triangle which marks the 5 centimeter point from the center of the V. When marking temari, you will be dividing sections of the ball into equal lengths, so using the metric system is a must.  I find it easy to hook the ruler around a pin and measure in 2 different directions at once.
