Get organized... Get inspired... References at your fingertips!
Keep a record of each temari you stitch and have a great resource all in the same journal. I've collected all my favorite charts and guides and added them to the journal along with a huge illustrated temari glossary, symbolism section and resources page. The last 2 sections in the journal are for you to write - the patterns you stitch and your ideas and patterns you WANT to stitch.
Temari Glossary and Stitch Directory
The Glossary is 12 pages containing 81 separate entries from 'All-Over Design' to 'Zabuton.' Many of the terms are illustrated and translated into Japanese. If you have seen the glossary in the back of Japanese Temari, A Colorful Spin on an Ancient Craft, you have an idea of what the Journal Glossary looks like. However, I've expanded it and added many temari tips and my favorite techniques. I've been trying to remember all the tips I give out in classes and add them to the glossary.
Kanji for Temari Terms
Learn to recognize Japanese characters for 51 different terms used in stitching temari. This is a section containing 3 pages of temari terms in English, Romaji (the English pronunciation of the Japanese word), and the kanji, hiragana or katakana to match. Use these pages to give you clues to figuring out the diagrams and instructions in Japanese temari books.
Symbolism
One of my favorite sections of my journal. It used to be an unorganized mess! But not any more. I've combined all my notes and research from many books into one large index to Japanese symbolism. 132 entries fill 7 pages. Using symbolic designs and colors when planning a temari is a very important part of the art for me. This section will fill you with ideas to do the same and make a truly special creation.
My Patterns
When your friends say "what is temari?" show them these photos and patterns. You will love sharing the story behind each of your temari creations. They will love hearing all about your hobby.
This section contains 2 Contents pages and 10 Pattern Page forms for recording the details of each temari you stitch. The notes you make here are invaluable for remembering what threads you used, where you found the pattern, and the step-by-step of how you stitched the temari. You are free to photocopy the pattern page form to add more patterns to this section.
When you stitch a pattern that you purchase or download from the internet, file it away here.
Hopefully, this section will grow very quickly!
Ideas Scrapbook
The last section in the journal has it's own contents page and space to draw, doodle, glue in photographs or stash temari patterns until you have time to stitch them. In my own temari journal, this section is huge! It's my biggest inspiration when it's time for me to begin a new temari.
