Temari Basket

This is a wrapped design that is very fast to make. It looks good in any combination of colors. Wrap snugly around the ball. The exact distance between the metallic threads of the temari basket doesn't matter. It is important that the threads are evenly spaced, however.

Step 1

Place pins in ball for a simple 6-division. Do not add marking threads, only the pins. Place a second pin next to each pin around the equator. These are called 'keeper pins' because they will keep the threads you wrap through them together.

Step 2

Using metallic thread, bring the thread up at a between 2 keeper pins. Wrap all the way around the ball, through the keepers pins at b and back to a.

Step 3

Pivot through the keeper pins toward the right as shown. Space the wraps evenly (about 1/4 inch apart) at the poles. Wrap 4 times around the ball.

Step 4

Continue wrapping 4 more times around the ball on the other side of the north and south poles. The wraps with metallic thread from a to b are now finished.

Step 5

Use the same metallic thread to wrap between keeper pins c and d. Wrap right across threads from steps 2, 3 and 4.

Step 6

Use the same metallic thread to wrap between keeper pins e and f. Switch to perle cotton for the remaining wraps.

Step 7

Return to the first set of wraps between points a and b. With red perle cotton, wrap wider bands (6 rows) on the outsides of the metallic thread basket.

Step 8

With blue perle cotton, wrap bands 6 rows wide between keeper pins c and d as shown. Then use yellow perle cotton to wrap bands 6 rows wide between e and f.

Step 9

With metallic thread, come up under keeper pins and loop around all the threads there to cinch them together. Secure all intersections in the same manner.
