Stitch a 5-point star Japanese temari (hoshi kagari)

5-point star on temariBefore you stitch a star for the first time, draw one on paper and number the points. Then make sure when you stitch the star, you go in the same order. If it helps, pin small pieces of numbered paper on the lines where you will stitch. Then stitch in order of the numbers.

Step 1

You can stitch a star on a 5 division ball, but it's easier to mark a 10 division. Follow pattern directions for placing five numbered guide pins. These will be the points of the star.

Step 2

Begin an underground stitch 2" away from starting point (just to the right of the guideline at pin 1). Pull thread until knot pops down into thread wrap.

Step 3

Lay thread in straight line to pin 2. Take a small stitch into thread wrap, from right to left under guideline. Keep your needle perpendicular to the guideline. Turn ball counterclockwise so pin 3 is at top.

Step 4

Lay thread in straight line to pin 3. Take a small stitch into thread wrap, from right to left under guideline. Continue turning the ball counterclockwise and taking a stitch at each pin in order.

Step 5

Lay thread in straight line to pin 1. Take a small stitch into thread wrap, from right to left under guideline. Needle is at an angle so you will be ready to begin row 2. To begin row 2, turn ball counterclockwise so pin 2 is at top.

Step 6

Lay thread along side (and outside) the thread running from 1 to 2. Take a small stitch where your thread crosses the guideline. Continue turning ball counterclockwise and stitching under the guideline at each star point. If your threads bunch up, leave more space between stitches.© 2004 Kiku Designs
