Japanese Temari, A Colorful Spin on an Ancient Craft

Times Square Ball, New York City, New Year 2008
- Stitch a Times Square Ball Temari

As an avid temari stitcher, I tend to see possibilities everywhere! But this year, when it was announced that a new ball would drop at midnight in Times Square to bring in 2008, I was sure I could make a temari like that.  I recognized the Times Square Ball as a 32 multi-centered division.  The thousands of different lights mean there are thousands of different variations. I made my goal for 2008 to stitch one variation per month.

After 6 months and 6 new temari designs based on the Times Square New Year Ball, I have reached my personal goal of becoming comfortable marking and designing temari with many centers. In January, I began with 32 centers, in March progressed to 122, and have just finished a temari with 272 centers! So, I am moving on from the Times Square Ball inspiration.
