More information on this Times Square Ball project
This temari pattern will give you directions for creating the structural framework of the Times Square Ball. You could call this an exercise in marking! Take your time with adding all the guidelines to get nicely shaped triangles at the end.
The metallic gold and silver ribbons on a black background are perfect for an elegant New Year's Eve.
Supplies
39 centimeter ball wrapped in black thread
black perle cotton #8 (for "invisible" guidelines)
black perle cotton #5 (to outline intersections at the end)
1/8 " ribbon - 5 yards gold and 8 yards silver (yes, those numbers
are correct - it takes a lot of ribbon!)
I wish
you could see this ball in person (or I had a better camera!). The gold ribbon
has little holographic squares and reflects every little bit of light. The
silver shines as well. This ribbon was part of an Adornments package purchased
from a large craft store.
1. Make the ball
Wrap a 39 centimeter ball in black thread. These instructions will work for larger or smaller balls as well. Mark the ball with 32 centers using black perle cotton #8.
2. Wraps through the pentagons
This drawing shows the small pentagon shapes in yellow:
Place pins in the centers of all the pentagons. You will use these as pivot point when wrapping the ribbon. With gold metallic ribbon, come up in the center of a pentagon (see green circle in the drawing below). Following the long lines of the yellow pentagons, wrap to the next pentagon center, pivot around the pin, turning slightly to the left, and wrap along the long line to the next pentagon. All of these wraps follow the same pattern:
from a pentagon center,
wrap along the long line to the next pentagon center,
then pivot around the pin, slightly to the left and
wrap along the long line to the next pentagon center,
continuing the same pattern until you reach your starting point.

This drawing shows one complete wrap:

When you get back to your starting point:
in the green circle in the drawing
below (pentagon center), pivot around the pin in any direction along a
long line and begin the second wrap. The path is shown here in purple:

When you are finished with all the gold wraps, each pentagon will have 5 gold threads coming out from the center. You won't be able to get all of these done by just wrapping - some sections will have to be stitched. Just make sure that each pentagon center is complete with the 5 gold threads meeting in the center.
