Guide to Japanese Temari Books

Snowed in! I spent yesterday organizing my collection of temari books from Japan. They sure were in a mess! While I was at it, I decided to up the reviews and post them in a pdf that you can download. These are probably not ALL the temari books from Japan, just all the ones that I can get my hands on.

Our kimekomi book is taking off in sales thanks to the hard work of Anne Knudsen, our publisher at Breckling Press. If you are looking for the supplies to make kimekomi, check out these websites (links are on What's New page):

Dylite Smoothfoam Balls

sc_security="00635a62";
      Dremel VersaTip Hot Knife

Walnut Hollow makes several versions of their hot knife. It is carried at most major craft stores.

Satin Cord for trim - we like the #1 lightweight size. The #2 size is also good. It is always best to make the ball first but tucking in all of your fabric, and then audition different trims to see what works best.

Crazy embroidery on temari

I'm looking for a real challenge to help me develop and improve my temari stitching skills. Last year, when I saw the new lighted ball that was made to drop in Times Square in NYC, I realized it was really just a multicentered temari. Of course, the designers in NYC did not see it that way. Later, my husband (the chemist) explained that it was really only a version of a Bucky Ball. He brought a plastic puzzle Bucky ball home from work (DuPont)!

For the first 6 months of 2008, I copied different versions of the light pattern from the Times Square ball and, VOILA!, the multicenters temari became so familiar to me that I stopped that challenge, satisfied that I'd accomplished my goal early. Now, it's hard for me to stop with a C10. I tend to subdivide further, feeling like the C10 pentagons are too big.

Anyway, I absolutely love crazy quilting. And I absolutely love embroidery. And I absolutely love combining colors so they just pop and glow. And I absolutely love temari. So I think, for my own personal challenge for 2009, I will follow Sharon B's lead and set some sort of monthly goal. She always has a challenge for the year. You can follow along using her guidelines. It's not a pattern to copy exactly, just some ideas for the month. I am so inspired by Sharon's creativity. Have a look at her diamond squares (drool!).

Are you interested? I hope so. In January, I'll post my ideas for the month and the resulting temari. Feel free at any time to brain storm with me and challenge yourself, too. The embroidery that I have done on a temari ball so far is just sad compared to what *could* be done. I won't be uploading step-by-step patterns, only inspiration and sample of what I've done. I hope you'll try it, too.

Nov 21 - Help me promote temari

It always amazes me how many people I meet have never seen or heard of the craft of Japanese temari. Will you help me spread the word? Temari and kimekomi handballs make very special gifts that are inexpensive to make. Yes, they take time and thought and talent, but everyone appreciates those things in a gift more than the price tag. Give a gift lovingly made by hand or give a copy of a beautiful book about the craft this year.
Please share the link to Japanesetemari.com on Digg, Del.icio.us, MySpace, Facebook, Reddit, Stumbleupon or whatever sharing space you use on the web. Look for the link on Japanesetemari.com home page that says "share."
Help spread the fun!
