Japanese Temari Classes Online

Questions and Answers

1. I'm a fast stitcher. Do I have to wait a whole week for each part of the pattern?

Yes. Lessons are released once a week. If the entire class is waiting around for the next lesson, with their stitching for the week finished and with no questions, then the teacher can speed up and release the next lesson early. It's up to the teacher.

Some classes (like Morning Glory) are always open. Then entire pattern is in the group files so you can stitch at your own pace and not have to wait.

2. Why can't I use my own materials?

There are 2 reasons for this. First, the best ingredients are included in the kit. They are the supplies necessary to make the ball in the pattern. Many of us often "make do," using what we have around the house to make temari. Barb has discovered that when students use supplies that she gives them and they follow her directions, temari are round and they get marked quickly and correctly. It's amazing!

The second reason is to support the shop. When you go to a local shop to take a class, you either buy the kit from the store or get your individual threads from the store. It's part of what keeps them in business. The price you pay for the kit for an online class will be the normal retail price. The profit made by Kiku Designs helps keep Barb in threads for her own stitching! Of course, if you want to change colors and use your own thread when you stitch the ball, that's fine - more than fine. It's wonderful. You will need to purchase the same brand of thread to get the same results, but a change of color is fine. Threads that come in your kit could then be used for another project.

3. How does this work with regard to getting the lessons?

Once a week , the teacher will upload part of the pattern to the Yahoo group files section. It will be a pdf which you can open with Adobe Acrobat Reader (available free online). You sign on to the internet, check the group files and download and print the pattern at your convenience. During the week, you work on this part of the pattern at your convenience. If you have questions or want to share stories, you can post them to the group. Teacher will check in at the group every few days to make sure everyone is on track.

Some classes (like Morning Glory) are always open. Then entire pattern is in the group files so you can stitch at your own pace and not have to wait.

4. Is there a test or quiz each week?

No! The last lesson will be a list of skills you should have gained from the class and a review of terminology used (English and Japanese).

5. How often will you run a class?

Don't know the answer to that question yet. Hopefully, there will be one class a quarter, so 4 a year.

6. Can I request a class?

Sure! All temari designs taught in the online classes will be original work by the teacher, though. Send a request and perhaps you will inspire the teacher to create a design for you.

7. I don't use Paypal. How can I pay for the class?

Sign up time for each class will occur over 1 or 2 months. You will have plenty of time to send a check and have it clear before we start. Send check for the full class fee to Barbara Suess/Kiku Designs, 11616 Pacesferry Drive, Raleigh, NC 27614.

8.  What happens if I have to cancel and I have already paid for the class?

Let Barbara know before the sign up deadline for the class and you can have a full refund (less Paypal fees). If this happens after the deadline, the kit fee cannot be refunded because the threads were ordered just for you. Barbara will calculate the value of the kit items and refund the difference to you (less Paypal fee). Kit will still be mailed to you. You will NOT have a copy of the pattern, though.

9. Is this a live online event?
No, it's not. There won't be a chat session or anything like that. All communication will be done through posting messages in the Yahoo group. They will remain there so you can access them at any time.  Stitch at your convenience. Ask questions at your convenience.
