Japanese Temari, A Colorful Spin on an Ancient Craft

Advanced Temari Class

EGA National Seminar, Louisville, KY

September 4 and 5, 2008

Who is your “Mema”? She’s a Grandmother, Gran, Grannie, or Gram – that loving lady who spoils children, fattens you with your favorite food and is a shining star teaching you life’s lessons. Created for Barbara’s mother, Betty Blanton, this temari will challenge you with its marking process. However, after that, stitching the stars is not hard to do.

Prerequisites for this class:   you must be able to wrap a large (5 inch diameter) ball and mark it in a simple 10-division on your own . From that point, I'll show you how to mark the combination 10-division. Then we'll add some extra markings for this particular ball and stitch the design.  You may substitute different colors of stitching thread from your own supply.  So, if you'd like to make this one in Christmas colors, bring reds to replace the blues.  To get the best experience from this class, learn the kiku herringbone stitch by stitching "Bellflower" in Japanese Temari, A Colorful Spin on an Ancient Craft."

Threads used: Kreinik #16 braid for marking and embellishment and DMC #5 pearl cotton.

The classroom will be a showcase of antique and modern temari in many different designs.  Also, you will have the opportunity to study over 25 temari books from Japan. Bring your cameras!
